Contract Growing
Contract growing is key for reducing the cost of native seeds. Given our partnership with a successful farming organization, we can scale grow outs to meet large seed demands, maximize efficiency, and reduce prices. Depending on the species and the nature of the project, we request a one, two, or three-year delivery window to meet large-scale growing demands.
Transplants
We can increase the rate of amplification by growing out plugs in greenhouses. Transplants have quicker establishment for restoration purposes and are well-suited for applications like pollinator strips on working lands. We also offer mechanized planting in agricultural settings for increased efficiency and lower implementation costs.
Native seed on demand
We keep a diverse inventory of native seeds on hand for local restoration projects and to maintain our production fields. Our focus is source-identified ecotypes from San Joaquin Valley regions. We are ramping up inventories of our workhorse species to support local restoration efforts. Please contact us to find out what might be available. For larger projects, a contract growout will increase seed availability and reduce prices.
Wildland Seed Collections
With decades of experience working in the San Joaquin Valley and established relationships with farmers and local land-owners, we partner with collectors and biologists to collect wildland stock seed from diverse ecoregions throughout the Valley.
Regional partnerships and project collaborations
We can help to increase the success of your restoration and on-farm projects with advance planning for cost-effective integration of native plants. Collaborating with GVS early on enables us to plan our production cycles to support your plant material needs and improve project outcomes. We also develop custom seed mixes for a variety of project types, such as those listed below.
Habitat restoration
In addition to providing regionally appropriate native ecotypes most suitable for habitat restoration, our team of farmers, ecologists, and operational specialists can assist with services such as restoration planning, seed drilling and transplanting, weed control, and irrigation design.
Pollinator projects
We provide farm-tested pollinator mixes for pollinator-focused restoration and on-farm applications that improve biodiversity outcomes as well as farmer confidence. We also design grower friendly, cost-effective pollinator strips to incorporate into agricultural settings.
Cover crops
We understand that context is everything when it comes to the successful implementation of cover crops on a farm. We work with land managers to design effective rotational cover crops strategies that integrate native species. We provide custom mixes that are applicable on farms ranging from almond orchards to vineyards.
Solar projects
We provide low-growth, native ground cover for solar sites that reduces long term irrigation and maintenance costs. We can also help design native hedgerows that provide pollinator habitat and erosion control for perimeters of solar sites.
